Can You Plaster Over Plaster? Plastering Over Different Surfaces Explained

Yes, you can plaster over plaster — but whether it works depends entirely on what's underneath and what condition it's in. You can skim over sound old plaster, painted walls, plasterboard, wallpaper and even tiles, but each surface needs different preparation, and some (damp, blown or soft plaster) must be removed first.

This guide answers the question for every surface you're likely to have. For the specific case of plastering over old, damaged or historic plaster, see our dedicated guide: Plastering Over Old Walls — When It Works and When to Remove.

Quick Answers: Can You Plaster Over…

| Surface | Can you plaster over it? | Preparation needed | |---------|--------------------------|-------------------| | Sound old plaster | ✅ Yes | PVA seal, then skim | | Painted walls (sound paint) | ✅ Yes | Sand gloss, PVA, skim | | Flaking / peeling paint | ⚠️ Remove first | Scrape back to sound surface | | Plasterboard | ✅ Yes | Tape joints, scrim, skim | | Wallpaper | ⚠️ Strip first | Remove all paper, PVA, skim | | Tiles | ✅ Yes (with care) | Prime, scrim, bonding coat + skim | | Render (external) | ✅ Yes | Wet down, key, render coat | | Artex / textured ceiling | ✅ Usually | Seal, asbestos test (pre-2000), skim | | Blown / hollow plaster | ❌ No | Cut out, re-plaster | | Damp plaster | ❌ No | Fix damp, dry, re-plaster |

Can You Plaster Over Painted Walls?

Yes, as long as the paint is sound and well-adhered.

  • Matte emulsion: PVA seal and skim directly.
  • Gloss / oil paint: Sand to key the surface, apply PVA, then skim. Without sanding, the skim won't bond.
  • Flaking paint: Must be scraped off first. Skim over flaking paint and it peels off with the paint.

Can You Plaster Over Plasterboard?

Yes — this is how most modern walls are finished. New plasterboard is the ideal surface for a skim:

  1. Screw or dab-fix the board (see our plasterboard installation guide)
  2. Tape the joints with scrim tape
  3. Skim with Thistle MultiFinish in two thin coats
  4. The board gives a flat, stable substrate and the skim gives a seamless, paint-ready finish

Can You Plaster Over Wallpaper?

Technically yes, but you shouldn't. Wallpaper traps air and the paste softens under wet plaster, so the skim often bubbles and detaches. Always strip wallpaper first, then PVA and skim. The labour to strip is worth it — skimming over wallpaper is a shortcut that fails.

Can You Plaster Over Tiles?

Yes, if the tiles are well-bonded and sound. Skimming over tiles is common in kitchens and bathrooms where you want to lose the tiled look without ripping them out:

  • Prime the tile surface with a suitable primer
  • Apply scrim tape over the grout lines to prevent cracking
  • Bonding coat to build up the surface, then skim
  • Heavily glazed tiles may need mechanical keying first

Don't skim over loose or hollow tiles — the weight of plaster will pull them off the wall.

Can You Plaster Over Artex / Textured Ceilings?

Yes — skim over artex for a flat, modern ceiling. But:

  • Pre-2000 artex may contain asbestos — test before disturbing
  • Seal the artex with PVA first
  • Skim two coats to cover the texture
  • Deep textures may need a bonding coat first to flatten

For full details see Skimming Over Artex.

Can You Plaster Over Render?

External render can be plastered over (or re-rendered) if the existing render is sound:

  • Wet the wall to control suction
  • Key the surface if it's smooth
  • Apply a scratch coat, then a top coat of render
  • Match the existing render mix (cement:sand or lime:sand for period properties)

Don't render over cracked or hollow render — the new coat follows the old cracks. See External Plastering London.

When You Cannot Plaster Over the Existing Surface

Remove and re-plaster when the surface is:

  • Blown or hollow — no bond for the new plaster
  • Damp — moisture ruins the bond and mould grows through
  • Soft or crumbling — old lime or gypsum that has lost strength
  • Extensively cracked from movement — cracks telegraph through

See our plastering over old walls guide for the full tap test and removal decision.

Cost to Plaster Over Existing Surfaces

| Surface | Price per m² | Notes | |---------|-------------|-------| | Skim over sound plaster | £15–£25/m² | Cheapest — minimal prep | | Skim over painted walls | £18–£28/m² | Includes sanding/PVA prep | | Skim over plasterboard | £20–£30/m² | Board already fixed | | Skim over tiles (bonding + skim) | £25–£40/m² | Extra prep and bonding | | Skim over artex | £25–£45/m² | Seal + skim (asbestos-tested) | | Remove old + re-plaster | £25–£45/m² | When surface can't be saved |

Common Mistakes

  • Skimming over wallpaper — bubbles and detaches. Always strip first.
  • Skimming over flaking paint — the skim peels off with the paint.
  • Skimming over gloss without sanding — no key, no bond.
  • Skimming over damp — traps moisture, fails, grows mould.
  • Skimming over blown plaster — cracks and sounds hollow within months.

FAQs

Can you plaster straight over old plaster? Yes, if it's sound and dry — seal with PVA and skim. If it's blown, damp or soft, it must be removed first.

Can you plaster over painted walls? Yes — sand gloss paint to key it, PVA seal, then skim. Flaking paint must be removed.

Can you plaster over wallpaper? No — always strip it first. The paste softens and the skim bubbles off.

Can you plaster over tiles? Yes, if tiles are sound — prime, scrim the joints, bonding coat, then skim. Don't skim over loose tiles.

Can you plaster over artex ceilings? Yes, after sealing and (for pre-2000 artex) asbestos testing. See skimming over artex.
