Materials we use
British Gypsum Thistle MultiFinish for skimming, Thistle Bonding Coat for backing, Knauf plasterboard and Aquapanel for wet areas. We never substitute cheaper multi-finish on a ceiling where a backing coat is needed — it's the most common reason ceilings crack within a year.
British standards we work to
Plasterboard and gypsum plasters: BS EN 520 and BS EN 13279. Render systems: BS EN 998-1. We tape and scrim every board joint, use stainless beads (not cheap galvanised that rusts through paint), and allow full drying time before handover.
Common mistakes we see
Skimming straight onto bare brick without a bonding coat (blows within months), painting fresh plaster too early (sealing in moisture causes crazing), skipping PVA on old plaster (poor suction = peeling), and cheap artex removal without an asbestos test on pre-2000 ceilings.
When you should NOT skim
Don't skim over damp walls — moisture will blow the finish regardless of skill. Bare brick needs a backing coat first, not a skim. And if your artex contains asbestos (common pre-2000), it must be tested and removed by a specialist before any plastering — we will tell you, not just cover it.
Expected timescales
A single room: 1 day to skim, then 2–4 weeks to fully dry before painting. A full 3-bed house: 4–6 working days on site. We give you the exact timeline at quote stage and stick to it — no drifting start dates.
