Choosing between a day rate and a fixed per-job quote can make a significant difference to your final bill. The right choice depends on the size, complexity, and predictability of the work.

Use a day rate for: Small, unpredictable jobs where the full scope isn't clear until work begins. For example, investigating and repairing water-damaged plaster, where the extent of damage may not be visible until the surface is opened up. Day rates also suit ad-hoc repairs, small patch work, or maintenance tasks in rental properties.

Use per-job pricing for: Any job larger than one day's work. Whole-room skims, ceiling replacements, full-house re-skims, and new builds should always be quoted as a fixed price. This protects you from cost overruns — you know the total before work starts, regardless of how long it takes the plasterer. A skilled plasterer working efficiently should complete work faster than the day-rate equivalent, saving you money.

Use per-square-metre pricing for: Medium to large jobs where the area can be easily measured. This is the most transparent method — you can verify the area yourself and multiply by the agreed rate. Most professional plasterers quote per square metre for skimming, boarding, and rendering because it's fair to both parties.

When you receive multiple plastering quotes, comparing them fairly requires looking beyond the headline price. Here's what to check:

1. What's included? Does the quote include materials, or is it labour-only? Are removal of waste, protective covering of floors, and cleaning up included? A labour-only quote of £180/day looks cheaper than an inclusive £250/day, but once you add material costs, the total may be higher.

2. What's the estimated timeline? If one plasterer quotes £250/day for 3 days and another quotes £200/day for 5 days, the first option is cheaper overall despite the higher day rate. Ask for estimated completion time alongside the day rate.

3. Is there a written guarantee? Professional plasterers should guarantee their work for a reasonable period (typically 1–2 years). This is particularly important for larger jobs. A slightly higher day rate with a guarantee is better value than a cheap rate with no comeback.

4. Are they insured? Public liability insurance is essential. Ask for proof of insurance — a minimum of £1 million cover is standard. Uninsured plasterers offering very low day rates are a risk not worth taking.

5. Can you see examples of their work? Ask for photos of recent jobs or addresses of properties they've worked on. Reviews and references from previous clients are the best indicator of quality.
