Monocouche vs Silicone Render: Which Is Right for Your Home?

Monocouche render is a single-coat, through-coloured cement-based render; silicone render is a thin-coat, highly flexible render based on silicone resin. The key difference is that monocouche is a thick, self-coloured coat applied in one pass, while silicone render is a very thin topcoat applied over a base coat — usually as part of an external wall insulation system. Both are modern, low-maintenance alternatives to traditional sand-and-cement render, but they suit different walls.

The two systems

Monocouche render (e.g. K-Rend) is a cementitious, through-coloured render applied in one thick coat (15–20 mm). The colour runs all the way through, so it never needs painting. It's rigid but moderately flexible. See our what is K-render guide for the detail.

Silicone render is a thin-coat render (1.5–3 mm) made with silicone resin, applied over a reinforced base coat — often on insulation boards in an EWI (external wall insulation) system. It's highly flexible, very breathable, and comes pre-coloured.

Comparison

When to use monocouche

Monocouche suits direct application onto sound masonry — brick or block — where you want a thick, durable, through-coloured finish in one coat. It's a good choice for a solid external wall that doesn't need insulation added.

When to use silicone render

Silicone render is the standard finish for external wall insulation systems, where insulation boards are fixed to the wall, a reinforced base coat is applied, and the thin silicone topcoat finishes the surface. If you're adding insulation as well as a render finish, silicone render is usually the right choice. Its high flexibility also suits walls that might move or crack slightly.

Flexibility and cracking

Silicone render is more flexible than monocouche, so it's better at accommodating slight movement without cracking. Monocouche is rigid; on a wall that moves, it can develop fine cracks over time. For older properties or walls with any movement, flexibility matters.

Breathability

Both are breathable, but silicone render is more so. For solid-wall construction where breathability is important — to avoid trapping moisture — silicone (or a breathable system like lime) is preferable. See our lime plastering guide for when breathability is the deciding factor.

Cost

Monocouche is generally cheaper per square metre than a full silicone-render EWI system, because the latter includes insulation, base coats, reinforcement and the thin topcoat. If you're only rendering (not insulating), monocouche is usually the more economical choice. If you want insulation too, the silicone-render EWI system is the way to go.

Which is right for your home?

  • Solid masonry, no insulation needed, want a durable coloured finish — monocouche
  • Want to add external wall insulation — silicone render over EWI
  • Older solid wall where breathability is critical — consider lime or a highly breathable silicone system
  • Wall with some movement — silicone render's flexibility helps

For either system, correct installation matters more than the brand — see our external plastering page.

FAQ

Is monocouche the same as silicone render? No. Monocouche is a thick, single-coat, through-coloured cement render. Silicone render is a thin, flexible topcoat, usually over insulation.

Which is more flexible? Silicone render. It accommodates movement better and is less likely to crack than monocouche.

Does either need painting? No — both are pre-coloured. Monocouche is through-coloured; silicone render has a coloured topcoat.

Which is cheaper? Monocouche is usually cheaper per square metre. A silicone-render EWI system costs more because it includes insulation.

Can you use silicone render directly on brick? Usually it goes over a base coat, often on insulation. Applied directly, it still needs a reinforced base coat — it's not a direct-to-brick topcoat.
