Artex Ceiling Skimming: The Complete Guide to Smooth Ceilings

Understanding Artex Ceiling Skimming

For many homeowners across London, the legacy of the 1970s and 80s remains etched into their ceilings in the form of textured Artex. If you are looking to update your home, artex ceiling skimming is the definitive solution to transform those dated, swirly patterns into a smooth, contemporary finish. As a professional plasterer in London, we frequently encounter these surfaces and understand the unique challenges they present.

The Benefits of Smoothing Your Ceilings

Removing or covering Artex drastically improves the aesthetic appeal of a room. Beyond the visual upgrade, a smooth ceiling reflects light better, making your living spaces feel larger and more open. This is particularly relevant for period properties in boroughs like Kensington, Chelsea, or Islington, where original character meets the need for modern interior standards. If you are considering Artex Covering London options, skimming remains the most cost-effective method to achieve a premium look.

The Technical Process of Artex Ceiling Skimming

Achieving a mirror-like finish over textured ceilings requires precision. Not all Artex can simply be skimmed over; safety is our first priority.

1. Asbestos Testing: Many older Artex coatings contain asbestos. Before we begin, we ensure the surface is safe.
2. Surface Preparation: We apply a high-grade PVA bonding agent to ensure the new plaster adheres perfectly.
3. The Skim: Using multi-finish plaster, we apply two thin, consistent coats to mask the texture entirely.
4. Polishing: Once the plaster starts to set, we use trowels to burnish the surface, creating that signature smooth finish.

For those also dealing with cracks or water damage, we often combine this with Ceiling Plaster Repair London to ensure the structural integrity of the ceiling before the final aesthetic skim is applied.

Artex Ceiling Skimming Costs: London 2026 Prices

Budgeting for home improvements in the capital can be tricky. When calculating the Plastering Cost London homeowners should expect for 2026, several factors influence the final quote, including ceiling height, the intensity of the existing texture, and room size.

• Small Room (e.g., hallway/small bedroom): £350 – £500
• Medium Room (standard living room): £500 – £750
• Large/Complex Ceiling: £800+

These estimates include materials and labor. For larger renovation projects, you might find that combining this with Wall Skimming London or a Full House Replastering can offer better value per square meter. Always consult our Plastering Prices London page for a more detailed breakdown based on your specific area.

Why Choose Professional Skimming over Boarding?

While some might suggest over-boarding (installing new plasterboard over the Artex), skimming is often preferred for maintaining original ceiling heights, especially in Victorian homes with ornate coving. Boarding can often obscure original features, whereas professional skimming retains the room's proportions.

FAQ

Is Artex ceiling skimming messy?

It is a dusty process, but we use modern dust extraction and protection techniques to keep your furniture and floors clean during the work.

How long does the plaster take to dry?

Generally, it takes 24 to 48 hours for the plaster to dry completely, depending on the humidity in your home.

Can I paint immediately after skimming?

No. You must wait until the plaster has fully cured, which is indicated by a uniform light pink color. This usually takes a few days.

Is there an alternative if the Artex is damaged?

If the Artex is loose or crumbling, we may recommend Dry Lining London to create a brand-new, stable surface.
