What Is Plaster Skimming?

Skimming is the process of applying a thin finish coat of plaster — typically 2-3mm thick — over an existing wall or ceiling surface. The result is a perfectly smooth, flat surface ready for painting or wallpapering.

Skimming is the final plastering stage. It's applied over a rougher base (either existing old plaster, or a plasterboard base) to create the smooth finish you see in finished rooms. It's different from full replastering, which involves applying multiple coats to create the entire wall thickness.

How Is Skimming Done?

The skimming process involves several steps carried out by an experienced plasterer:

   Preparation: Surfaces are cleaned, any loose plaster removed, and plasterboard joints are taped. A bonding agent (PVA or bonding coat) may be applied to improve adhesion on some surfaces.

   First coat: The first layer of finish plaster is applied with a steel float trowel, working across the surface in sweeping motions. This coat fills the base texture.

   Second coat: A second thin coat is applied while the first is still slightly wet. This builds up the smooth surface and fills any low spots.

   Trowelling up: As the plaster begins to harden, the plasterer repeatedly trowels the surface with a clean, slightly dampened steel trowel. This polishes the surface and fills tiny imperfections.

   Drying: Fresh plaster dries to a pale pink/cream colour over 24 hours, then continues to cure for 2-4 weeks before painting.

Skimming vs Replastering — What's the Difference?

Skimming is applying a thin finish coat over an existing base. It's the most common type of plastering work.

Replastering involves removing the existing plaster back to the wall, applying a new backing coat (browning or bonding), and then a skim coat on top. This is needed when the existing plaster has failed, is crumbling, has damp damage, or is too damaged to skim over.

Most London properties just need skimming (especially in rooms where wallpaper has been removed, or after dry lining). Our plasterers always assess which approach is needed before quoting.
