Taping and jointing is a fast, cost-effective method of finishing plasterboard walls without the need for a wet plaster skim coat. Joints between boards are filled, taped, and feathered to create a seamless, paint-ready surface. It's 40–50% cheaper than skimming and ideal for new builds, extensions, and commercial projects.
Taping and jointing in London costs £12–£18 per m² — about 40–50% cheaper than plasterboarding and skimming (£20–£35/m²). A standard room (15–20m² of wall) costs £180–£360. Boards are finished, sanded, sealed and painted directly, with no wet skim coat. London Plastering Service covers all 32 boroughs and quotes within 60 minutes.
Taping and jointing — also known as drywall finishing — is the process of creating a smooth, seamless surface on plasterboard walls by filling and finishing only the joints between boards, rather than applying a wet plaster coat over the entire surface.
The process involves three coats of jointing compound: a bedding coat (with tape), a filling coat, and a finishing coat. Each coat is feathered out wider than the last, creating a gradual transition from the recessed joint to the board surface. After sanding, the wall is smooth enough to paint directly.
This method is standard in commercial construction and increasingly popular in residential new builds because it's faster, cheaper, and produces less mess than wet plastering. The finish quality is excellent for most applications, though slightly less smooth than a full skim coat.
| Service | Cost Per m² | vs Skimming |
|---|---|---|
| Taping and jointing only | £12–£18 | 40–50% cheaper |
| Plasterboard + tape and joint | £16–£25 | 30–40% cheaper |
| Plasterboard + skim coat | £20–£35 | Baseline |
| Skimming only (existing board) | £8–£15 | Baseline |
Taping and jointing saves money because it eliminates the skim coat — the most labour-intensive part of plastering. Instead of covering the entire wall with wet plaster, only the joints (typically 10% of the wall area) are filled and feathered.
For a standard room (20m2 of wall area), taping and jointing costs £240–£360. The same room fully skimmed would cost £300–£500. The savings increase with larger areas, making taping and jointing particularly cost-effective for whole-house and commercial projects.

For most domestic new builds and extensions, taping and jointing provides excellent value. For period properties, renovations, or where you want the highest quality finish, skimming remains the gold standard.
