How to Tell When Plaster Is Dry
Plaster changes colour as it dries. Fresh plaster is dark — typically dark pink, brown, or grey depending on type. As moisture evaporates, the colour lightens to a uniform pale pink, cream, or light grey.
The visual test: The plaster is dry when the entire surface has changed to a uniform pale colour with no dark patches. Any remaining dark areas indicate trapped moisture — wait until they disappear before painting.
The touch test: Dry plaster feels hard, cool, and dry to the touch. If it feels damp, soft, or leaves a mark when pressed, it needs more time.
The key rule: If in doubt, wait. Painting too early is the most common cause of plastering failures. An extra 24 hours costs nothing; repainting a blistered wall costs everything.
